VET Award in Introduction to GMAW (MAG/FCAW)

MQF Level: 2

Learning Points: 4

Total Hours: 50           Theory 12hrs

                                     Practice 38hrs

Course Description:

This course is intended for participants who have little or no knowledge or skill in welding. It covers a number of welding positions and techniques specifically to allow the student to get familiarized in this field. During practice participants will perform welds in the flat and horizontal positions using different techniques. This course will prepare the student for the Intermediate GMAW (MAG/FCAW).

The modules that will be covered in this course include:

  1. Overview of welding and safe practices
  2. Practice

Course learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this course participants should:

  • Define safety hazards related to welding and the working environment
  • Practice safe working techniques
  • Identify different welding processes and welding techniques
  • Identify critical welding equipment and parameters in the GMAW process
  • Produce structural welds in the flat and horizontal positions using the GMAW process
  • Distinguish between the different welding positions and types of welded joints

Prerequisites: None

Course Title: VET Award in Intermediate GMAW (MAG/FCAW)

MQF Level: 3

Learning Points: 7

 Total Hrs                    Theory 15 hrs

                                    Practice 65 hrs

Course Description:

The welding discipline covered in this course is GMAW. It is intended for participants who have sufficient knowledge and experience in this field of welding and capable to produce welds of good quality in the flat and horizontal positions. During practice, participants will perform butt welds (without backup) in the horizontal (PC) and vertical (PF) positions, using different welding techniques.

The modules that will be covered in this course include:

  1. GMAW – Intermediate Level
  2. Assessing the weld quality and its metallurgical properties (ferrous metals)
  3. Practice

 Course learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this course participants should:

  • Have general knowledge on GMAW equipment, parameters and the different wire electrodes
  • Perform sound structural  welds in the horizontal and vertical positions using the GMAW process
  • Make correct selection of the different transfer modes while welding
  • Attain general knowledge on the different shielding gases used in the GMAW process
  • Understand the general concept of welding metallurgy and weldments
  • Distinguish between different weld discontinuities and identify their causes
  • Be acquainted to the different destructive and non-destructive testing methods used in welding
  • Understand the concept of material failure modes with respect to their design
  • Define different materials and identify their mechanical properties
  • Have factual knowledge on the weldment properties and weldability of different metals

Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of VET Award in Introduction to GMAW (MAG/FCAW) or approval of instructor through a preliminary test.
