Course Title: VET Award in Introduction to Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW)

MQF Level: 2

Learning points: 4

Total Hours: 50                      Practice: 38hrs

                                                Theory: 12hrs

 Course Description:

The welding discipline covered in this course is MMAW. This course is intended for participants who have little or no knowledge or skill in welding. It covers a number of welding positions and techniques to allow students to familiarize themselves with the field. During practice, participants will perform welds in the flat and horizontal positions using different techniques. This course will prepare participants for VET Award in Intermediate Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW).

The modules that will be covered in this course include:

  • Overview of welding and safe practices
  • Practice

Course learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this course participants should:

  • Define safety hazards related to welding and the working environment
  • Attain factual knowledge on hot work permits and confined space
  • Practice safe working techniques
  • Identify different welding processes and welding techniques
  • Identify critical welding equipment and parameters in the MMAW process
  • Produce structural welds in the flat and horizontal positions using the MMAW process
  • Distinguish between the different welding positions and types of welded joints

Prerequisites: None

Course Title: VET Award in Intermediate Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW)

MQF Level 3

Learning Points: 7

Total 80 Hours:               Theory 15 hrs

                                         Practice 65 hrs

Course Description:

The welding discipline covered in this course is MMAW.  It is intended for participants who have sufficient knowledge and experience in the field of MMAW and who are capable of producing welds of good quality in the flat and horizontal positions. During practice the student is to perform butt welds (without backup) in the horizontal (PC) and vertical positions (PF), using different welding techniques (stringer bead and weaving techniques). Students who apply for this course will be trained in an industrial workshop environment and may have the opportunity be exposed to related ongoing work. This course will prepare participants for VET Award in Advanced Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW). Participants who have successfully completed this course and choose not to further their training, may still be applicable for welding jobs covering the range of welding positions up to PF/3G.

The modules that will be covered in this course include:

  1. MMA welding principle, equipment, parameters and electrodes – Intermediate Level
  2. Assessing the weld quality and its metallurgical properties (ferrous metals)
  3. Practicum

Course learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this course participants should:

  • Attain general knowledge on MMAW equipment, parameters and the different electrodes
  • Perform sound structural  welds in the horizontal and vertical positions using the MMAW process
  • Understand the general concept of welding metallurgy and weldments
  • Distinguish between different weld discontinuities and identify their causes
  • Be acquainted to the different destructive and non-destructive testing methods used in welding
  • Understand the concept of material failure modes with respect to their design
  • Define different materials and identify their mechanical properties
  • Have factual knowledge on the weldment properties and weldability of different metals
  • Be proficient enough to further sit for the industrial “3G” welders trade certification test

Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of VET Award in Introduction to Manual Metal Arc Welding or approval of instructor through a preliminary test.

Course Title: Vet Award in Advanced Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW)

MQF Level: 4

Learning Points: 11

Total Hrs                      Total Hrs

Lect./Disc. 20                Practice 100

Course Description:

The welding discipline covered in this course is MMAW. It is intended for participants who have good knowledge and experience in MMAW but intend to broaden their knowledge and skill in this process. This course is for participants who are capable of producing welds of good quality in the horizontal and vertical positions. During practice, participants will perform butt welds (without backup) in the overhead position, using different welding techniques (stringer bead and weaving techniques).  Pipe welding in the PA, PC, PH and H-L045 positions will be included. This course serves as sound preparation for participants seeking to work in the oil and gas industry as professional welders.

The modules that will be covered in this course include:

  1. MMA welding principle, equipment, electrodes, parameters and arc deflection- Advanced Level
  2. Print Reading and welding symbols
  3. Practice

Course learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this course participants should:

  • Have factual and theoretical knowledge on MMAW equipment, parameters and the different electrodes
  • Make correct selections of welding parameters and electrodes related to MMAW to perform sound welds
  • Apply the correct welding technique and welding parameters to remove any weld imperfections
  • Perform sound structural welds in the overhead positions using the MMAW process
  • Perform sound pipe welds in the PA, PC, PH and H-L045 positions using the MMAW process
  • Read blueprints and understand the different welding symbols

Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of Vet Award in Intermediate Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW) or approval of instructor.
